"Sushi in Texas? Shouldn't you be eating BBQ?"... This was definitely the reaction I got from so many of my friends when they asked me about Houston's foodie scene, however, I'm happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome sushi at Uchi in Houston, Texas. I received a recommendation about this place from my coworker who is a local and couldn't be more thankful for it. Uchi is definitely in a more hipster part of town and it had more upscale decor with a laid-back feel. When I arrived, I had no reservation and the hostess told me that it might be over an hour wait (even though I was just by myself). Luckily, by the time I used the ladies' room and came back, there was a spot open for me at the sushi bar! I love eating at the bar while traveling solo on business as it's definitely less awkward and you get to talk with the chef and watch all the action. Everything I had was delicious and I really liked how they let me order 1/2 sizes of most dishes so that I could try more things. I would highly recommend the Hama Chili (baby yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili, orange supreme), Walu Walu (oak-grilled escolar, candied citrus, yuzupon, myoga), and the seared Foie Gras Nigiri (seriously, unlike any nigiri you've had yet). Make a reservation if you can, or else come solo and have more of this goodness to yourself!
